Remembered for his poetry, fiction, essays, and translations, this early 20th-century Hindi author was a major figure in the Chhayavaad (Neo-Romantic) literary movement of the 1920s and ’30s. One of his most famous poems, “Saroj Smriti,” was inspired by his love for his daughter.
He grew up speaking the Bengali language and later learned to converse and write in the Hindi tongue.
He introduced free-verse poetry into the Hindi literary canon.
