Israeli politician and the seventh Prime Minister of Israel, who held the office from 1983 to 1984 and then again from 1986 to 1992. He was also the Speaker of the Knesset, the Israeli legislature, from 1977 to 1980.
His family was killed during the Holocaust but he escaped a similar fate because he migrated to Palestine in 1935.
As prime minister he saw an influx of millions of Jewish Soviet refugees to his country because of his actions to make immigration by Jews to Israel easier.
